Valedictorian’s – Ethics vs. the world

You know… every now and then I have to add a little “you’ve got to be kidding” to my chronicles.

Why are schools taking the microphones away from their own valedictorian’s who happen to mention or thank God for their successes in life? Or for mentioning that they haven’t received the best education because they aren’t taught about ethics.

It doesn’t matter if it’s God or Buddha… why are we restricted in mentioning that higher power we each may or may not feel deep inside that gives us lift and encouragement. Hell… it could be a stuffed frog or a statue of Elvis.

What really gets me is that if someone stood up there and DID say that a stuffed frog or Elvis helped get them where they are, blah, blah, blah… they would probably get applauded for being unique and daring. But mention God and LOOK OUT… now we’re pushing the envelope way too far.

Funny… imagine how our laws, constitution, amendments, etc. would sound if we were to start over from the very beginning TODAY.

We’d all be wearing t-shirt that read Gays are Great, God is dead and Killing is Cool. Ironically, I could care less if someone is gay or God fearing or not… although I do have issues with those who kill others, but when it comes to things like abortion, I feel it should be taken to the people and voted upon; but my personal belief is that it’s a decision a grown adult should be able to make in the first trimester. But that’s just my personal opinion. 🙂

(I’m one of those people who lean more conservative but not in every venue and not hard-core)

What I would like to point out is this… I’m not necessarily a Christian myself; I believe there is something/someone who is a greater power than I, but I have yet to determine what he/she/it is.

Some people who are reading this will either a) immediately seek me out to convert me to Christianity or b) seek me out to call me a free thinker who needs to get far away from God and the like.

I can’t stand people like that.

Society is backwards… and people are beginning to open their eyes and see the truth. In an effort to bring more to their side, those who are making these poor decisions and pushing us are only making us go further and further away.

I am my own person… oh… and America is great!! 🙂

The Pledge of Allegiance

John McCain’s remarks about the Pledge of Allegiance.

In light of the recent appeals court ruling in California, with respect to the Pledge of Allegiance, the following recollection from Senator John McCain is very appropriate.

“The Pledge of Allegiance” – by Senator John McCain

As you may know, I spent five and one half years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. In the early years of our imprisonment, the NVA kept us in solitary confinement or two or three to a cell. In 1971, the NVA moved us from these conditions of isolation into large rooms with as many as 30 to 40 men to a room.

This was, as you can imagine, a wonderful change and was a direct result of the efforts of millions of Americans on behalf of a few hundred POWs 10,000 miles from home.

One of the men who moved into my room was a young man named Mike Christian. Mike came from a small town near Selma, Alabama. He didn’t wear a pair of shoes until he was 13 years old. At 17, he enlisted in the US Navy. He later earned a commission by going to Officer Training School. Then he became a Naval Flight Officer and was shot down and captured in 1967. Mike had a keen and deep appreciation of the opportunities this country and our military provide for people who want to work and want to succeed.

As part of the change in treatment, the Vietnamese allowed some prisoners to receive packages from home. In some of these packages were handkerchiefs, scarves and other items of clothing.

Mike got himself a bamboo needle. Over a period of a couple of months, he created an American flag and sewed it on the inside of his shirt. Every afternoon, before we had a bowl of soup, we would hang Mike’s shirt on the wall of the cell and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

I know the Pledge of Allegiance may not seem the most important part of our day now, but I can assure you that–in that stark cell–it was indeed the most important and meaningful event.

One day, the Vietnamese searched our cell, as they did periodically, and discovered Mike’s shirt with the flag sewn inside, and removed it.

That evening they returned, opened the door of the cell, and for the benefit of all of us, beat Mike Christian severely for the next couple of hours. Then, they opened the door of the cell and threw him in. We cleaned him up as well as we could.

The cell in which we lived had a concrete slab in the middle on which we slept. Four naked light bulbs hung in each corner of the room.

As I said, we tried to clean up Mike as well as we could. After the excitement died down, I looked in the corner of the room, and sitting there beneath that dim light bulb with a piece of red cloth, another shirt and his bamboo needle, was my friend, Mike Christian. He was sitting there with his eyes almost shut from the beating he had received, making another American flag. He was not making the flag because it made Mike Christian feel better. He was making that flag because he knew how important it was to us to be able to pledge our allegiance to our flag and country.

So, the next time you say the Pledge of Allegiance, you must never forget the sacrifice and courage that thousands of Americans have made to build our nation and promote freedom around the world. You must remember our duty, our honor, and our country.

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

A Cat’s Diary

Day 183 of my captivity.

My captors continued to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.

They dine lavishly on fresh meat while I am forced to eat dry cereal.

The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape and the mild satisfaction I get from clawing the furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another house plant.

Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded. Maybe I should try this at the top of the stairs .

In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors; I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair. I must try this on their bed.

Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body in an attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little kitty cat I was. This is not working according to plan.

There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary confinement throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the food. More important, I overheard that my confinement was due to my powers of inducing something called “allergies.” Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit.

The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an informant. He speaks with them regularly and I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room, his safety is assured. But I can wait.

The Virgin Connie Swail

I usually keep politics out of my personal space (ie The Phoenix Chronicles)… but lately, I’m beginning to wonder what the HELL is going on!

My question for the day is this… has it always been like this? I thought the civil war ended in 1865 (and yes… I did have to google that date). Maybe so much crap is happening in so many different areas of politics that I’m feeling the bombs splatting on my brain.

War, gas, immigration, hurricanes, racial cards and racial hate, Hilary, Bush… I’m beginning to think it’s one giant conspiracy against the average American citizen.

Maaaaaaaaaaaybe the politicians have to sign a top-secret unnnnn-breakable contract stating they will help put everyone who is NOT a politician (or Hollywood freak show) into straight-jackets in order to get elected. But first… they must undergo sacrificing the Virgin Connie Swail.

They just can’t get along…

Bomb them to hell or get the hell out.
Send them home or give them a home… lock the borders or give everyone a key.
Create natural disasters or invent a plastic bubble.
Toss in the racial card when someone says “boo” and hate everyone who isn’t wearing the same skin.

How about this…

Put Hilary and Bush (and a few other current political nightmares) into a rocket ship… One of these days… ONE OF THESE DAYS… POW…

I support our president… but these days he seems to sway with whatever direction the wind happens to blow. And yes… I do have my opinions about many different subjects… I’m just tired of those on one side making those on the other come to a point where they HAVE to stand up and shout in order to truly be heard.

And now… for something completely different… I have a hemroid!

No More Bush Bashing

I’m tired of all the President Bush bashing. I’m sick or it! I hate it! And I think those people who spend a majority of their time doing it, should take a look at their own personal lives before attempting to tell people how to run the country.

Perhaps they actually think they themselves are perfect and would do a better job than Bush… or maybe they believe they would have put a stop to that sick bastard Saddam in some other “politically correct” fashion.

I think that if these people spent even half the time on their own internal issues, they actually may be able to come close to being perfect. Doubtful… but maybe close.

When I hear people saying that they wish President Bush was dead… I get a knot in my stomach. Wishing another person was dead because they are a rapist or murderer is one thing… wishing a man dead because he isn’t running the country in some other way is asinine.

And NO… I do not believe Bush is a murder because we went to war. That’s ridiculous. How many people did the war in Iraq actually SAVE? How many more people would have died if Saddam was allowed to continue to control that country? Does that even matter to people?

I hear people on the television and radio getting pissed off at Bush because he caused us to go to war and innocent people on all sides had to die.

First of all… it isn’t Bush who caused us to go to war. Second… it was not only Bush who made the decision to go to war. There were other countries involved in this situation.

And yes… innocent people died and yes… it’s a tragedy. But how many more innocent women, children, grandparents and fathers had to die because of Saddam’s rule? Were we to just wait around another 15 years until the next time he became more powerful?

Should we lock down America

Would it be a good idea to refuse to let anyone else come to live here?

I think it would be a very bad idea to just close our doors to every person who wants to either visit or move here. If we did close our doors, would we then allow people to visit our wonderful country? Would we have someone follow them around like a spy making sure they actually leave and go back to their country when their done visiting?

And would anyone really want to visit us anymore knowing that they can’t stay… knowing that we are evil and unjust. Some would say that making English the only language of America is a good idea. I feel they are a little off to some degree. I do feel that anyone moving here has an obligation to learn the language of the country they live in. But I also feel it is important for the American people to learn languages from other countries because we are not the god of countries. We are America and that means alot in my view – but we are not God.

Allowing others to move to America is a wonderful thing – but I have mixed feelings on the subject because I don’t want to become a minority in my own country. Not necessarily because of my race, but because it seems that there are many people walking around enjoying the benefits of this country but they are not citizens of it. I truly feel that if you are to benefit from the many, many wonderful aspects of America – you should become a citizen of America. Not over night, of course; each person has to have time to decide if they truly like living in America. But there needs to be some type of time limit envolved.

Perhaps there could be some sort of law or requirement that says a person can visit America for a certain period of time in which they must decided if they are to be a citizen or to move back to their original country.

I have a feeling that as I am typing this, that there may actually be a requirement like this because I have come across people who have had to move back home because their visa ran out. I have no idea what that means, nor will I pretend to have knowledge of what is involved with visas. I don’t know if they are governed by the country you originate from or the country you are visiting.

I feel that people should be allowed to visit America for a period of time (perhaps living here for two years) to determine if this is the place they want to spend the rest of their life. And then upon that period of time ending, they can request for an extention of up to one more year. Then upon that year ending, they must decide what they want to do. If they decide not to become a citizen and they move back to their country, they then have the opportunity within another year to change their mind and move back permanately as a citizen of America. If they do not decide to move here within that year, then they must wait another five years before they can begin the process all over again. They can still be able to visit America during that five year waiting period, but only for weeks at a time and perhaps only twice a year (?).

In this way, we are not denying anyone a citizenship without giving them ample opportunity to decide what they want. Moving to another country is a huge decision that should be thought out. I know I wouldn’t just decide over night to move to Australia – however, it is a place I would consider if I were to leave America (which will, more than likely, never happen). Visiting Australia would be great – maybe a month or two. I’m sure they must have some sort of time period in which a person can visit without being a citizen. :o)

They aren’t all True Protestors

I have the news on right now and listen intensively and yet don’t really want to.

My mind if filled with many thoughts about what is happening here in America and across the world. They just said on the news that Bush is relying on his advisers quite a bit right now. I can understand that… but I just don’t know how anyone can make a decision like this. I never wish the presidency upon any of my family or friends.

With that said, I think it’s important for the American people to support our military with praise and hope for their safe return. Anyone who protests in such a way to hurt those individuals who are being sent to do what they are instructed to do, is not an American in my book. Does being an American mean anything to anyone any more? I grew up believing that this is the best damn country in the world. Of course, I suppose people from other countries feel the same about where they live.

Some protestors are “true” protestors. In other words, they are protesting because they are in hopes that what they are doing will make a difference. But there are some protestors I’ve seen on TV who are obviously just trying to get a little attention. They’re smiling as they’re being arrested… actually in hopes that they are arrested. Do they hope to tell their grandkids one day that they stood up against their own country and, in that way, are not to blame for any war that may happen. “I was against it… look… here’s proof”.

I just feel angry sometimes. It burns in my mind and there really is nothing I can do about it. I don’t feel compelled to force my opinions on any other person… not even my son. When he asks questions, we look it up. When he’s scared, I wrap my arms around him. The only way that I force my opinions on him is in the form of telling him what he shouldn’t do (ie. drugs, smoking, drinking, sex, etc.). I sound like a stick in the mud… but even at 11 years old these are all issues that must be addressed.

I do feel indifferent at times when it comes to what’s happening with America, Iraq, Bin Laden, etc. I feel helpless and in order to get rid of that feeling, I’m in hopes that someone else will take care of it. Right or wrong… I want our leaders to take care of it. I can’t possibly do it and sometimes want to just hid myself in a hole.

It is now 4:25pm.

Time just moves forward with no regard for what is happening around it.

Where’s Eisenhower when you need him?

My political opinion… I know you’ve been waiting for my opinion… well…

Opinions are like assholes… everybody’s got one. And so do I.

I wish I were more educated when it comes to current affairs in our world. But on the other hand I sometimes feel like my brain is already so totally full of crap to begin with that I can’t possibly handle all the other crap that the media wants to add.

I think that’s partly why I avoid news stories. I know I shouldn’t do that because how else am I going to know when something important is happening… I just wish they would say something nice for a change.

Well, I guess they did yesterday when they announced that they found Elizabeth Smart. Of course now the media’s job is to figure out why the girl didn’t try to escape and in so doing, will probably make her look bad. I just hate people sometimes.

But I truly feel that everyone has an opinion about everything. Whether they know what the hell they’re talking about or not. I’ve seen opinions flying all over the place about Bush and Iraq and the whole terrorist scare.

Do I have an opinion. Well… of course I do! Good god… didn’t you just hear me say that everyone has one. Geesh.

Apparently there are tons of people that think going to war with Iraq is President Bush’s fault and that if we go to war it will all sit upon his shoulders as the man who started the whole damn thing.

Now that really makes sense.

If we do in fact go to war, I will be supportive of every man and woman in our military and I will never say a negative word about our country or our leader for fear that if I do, I may in some way be the cause of those men and women, who make this country free… to fall. How can anyone in the military do what needs to be done (whether I believe it to be the right thing or not) if their own country does not support them?

Wars are never pretty and sometimes they are unnecessary… and sometimes they are very necessary. Am I some great political analyst? Do I have some knowledge greater than others? Am I somehow able to know the future and know that all will be well in the world?

No… but I do believe that supporting our country is very important. This is the greatest country in the world. That’s why so many people move here… that’s why so many of us stay.

Forcing our own beliefs on others is wrong, but keeping the world safe is most definitely right. There isn’t enough money in the universe to make me take over for Bush. And apparently everyone thinks that if a different man sat in the white house we would be in a different situation. I don’t think so. If you think he’s the only one making these decisions for our country, you’re really not aware of how this country works.

How many of us would take the place of those faced with sending people… not only to kill others, but to possibly be killed themselves?

Leaders… true leaders are far and few in between. Is Bush one of those “true” leaders… probably not. But sometimes leading is what eventually makes a great leader.

Perhaps he will end up being one of those men in history that we all look back at… and just sit around laughing our asses off. But perhaps he will be more than we ever expected.

Unfortunately, only time will tell and perhaps the lives of some of our fellow Americans.

You know… we’ve had 43 presidents so far and I’m wondering how many of them were actually good men… and I’m wondering what those “good men” would do if they were president today.

Where’s Eisenhower when you need him?

Portion of his biography…
Before he left office in January 1961, for his farm in Gettysburg, he urged the necessity of maintaining an adequate military strength, but cautioned that vast, long-continued military expenditures could breed potential dangers to our way of life. He concluded with a prayer for peace “in the goodness of time.”
