I wrote the poem shown below on September 25, 2007. People tell us (Americans) we need to just let it go, not talk about what happened and just acknowledge that we deserved it.
That is not the place my mind dwells… we did not deserve it. If we look back through history… way back through the decades… we can find the reasons we were attacked and if we study it carefully we can determine that the reasoning coming from those 80 years ago still does not justify what was done.
And today we still sit in the rubble of a murderous attack… still we are not finished over there. And as we are told by our illustrious leaders (that’s sarcasm) that we are pulling all of our combat troops out of Iraq… in just a few days we send some back in. Political twists and lies… just a means for reelection.
Ironically, the indecisiveness to simply build a monument to those who died or rebuild the buildings that were once standing mirrors the indecisiveness our leaders have had during this war. They worry about what certain groups will think instead of just doing what needs to be done. Even people who stand behind the war grow weary and just want it over. There was a time when wars didn’t go on for ten years… now our leaders are too afraid of their own shadows to just finish and let everyone across the world rebuild.
If I offend you with my poem, I am not sorry for it… these are my feelings from three years ago when I realized that one day my own child could very well be a victim of the stupidity of nations across this world. My feelings remain the same but are now stronger. What agenda-filled, power-hungry politicians fail to realize is that if you dig into a wound long enough, eventually the owner of that wound will punch back.
I’m tired of everyone blaming America… especially those who only read the negative parts of history and somehow jump passed the positives. Admittedly, I grew up in a time when there was no war but poverty still touched my life. I am stronger now, I have learned from my own history and that of my parents and I do not live in poverty any longer… although I am far from rich. So to all in the world I would say, look at the entire life of your subject (be it a person or a country) and do not judge on one incident or what so-and-so told you… study and learn for yourself.
There are many things that many countries have done and we are expected to let it go and ignore history. We should never do that… we should learn from mistakes. But I would never point my finger at an entire country and say they deserved having their citizens killed for the sake of revenge. It’s amazing to me how childish humans can be.
