You know the old saying “the more things change, the more things stay the same”? It’s a very true statement. Watch the video below… it’s supposed to be funny (and is) but it sends out a meaningful message as well. I wonder if the people watching it so many years ago got the message I’m talking about?
If you ever watched this show, you realize that Archie and Edith do not agree on many things, and politics was no exception. Unfortunately, most of the message surrounding Archie was that of a bitter white racist man filled with selfishness who used his wife as a doormat. In actuality, his wife could have stood up for herself, but refused. Archie was not a violet man… just loud. The other members of his family (especially his daughter and son-in-law) disagreed with him, continually showing him up and making a fool out of the “idiot white man”.
If you can put that message aside and look at the truth behind some of what was being said on the show, you can see that there was a good message on both sides of the show’s coin. They tried to make him look bad, and thus make anyone who agreed with him also look bad. But this little clip… well it said something else (and notice all the clapping in the background).
Notice how Edith tries to make the situation okay by saying that it’s good for people to walk… thus apparently it’s okay if we’re told we can not have things we’ve been encouraged for so long to buy and use. It’s the liberal mentality… somehow it’s okay if we’re told we must sacrifice for the greater good even if it makes no sense at all.
Archie:
The Democrats are doing the whole thing… the Democrats! and you put them in there. The democrats way of ruining this country is to go tell us how we aught to make sacrifices. Oh, they’re great on that stuff. But they’re all gonna have us over the hill to the poor house. We ain’t gonna be able to drive over there cause we ain’t got no gas, we’re gonna have to walk.
Edith:
The readers digest says walking is very good for you.Archie:
The Readers Digest can always put a little joy into poverty. […] For years all our lives they’ve been telling us to go out and buy stuff that use energy. […] and now after all the big corporations have made billions and billions of dollars worth of profits… signals WHAM… they’ve changed. And after telling us for years that we can’t live without this junk, now they tell us that we gotta live without it. The country is going straight into the dumper!!”
Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant! A pic of Arch needs to go on my wall, right next to Goldwater and Hayek.
