Quote by Dr. Adrian Rogers (1931-2005)

Just a little something to think about…

“You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.”

  1. Great Quote. I listen to him sometimes on the way home.

So that your readers understand the mindset of the person who wrote the above quote, they should also know this:

Dr. Adrian Rogers once responded to a question about New Testament references in support of slavery, by saying, “I believe slavery is a much maligned institution; if we had slavery today, we would not have this welfare mess.”

Yup, that’s Dr. Rogers for you.

    For Robert Dyer:

Rogers supported the 2000 revision of the Baptist Faith and Message which states that, "the blessing of racial and ethnic diversity and acknowledged that all races possess full dignity by the creative intention of God."

  4. Robert MacDonald says:

    For Robert Dyer et al…

It amazes me that comments from the left will always ignore the question/quote/concept, but reply with something that has nothing to do with the issue at hand. If we were talking slavery, your comment would be appropriate. But of course we weren't.

  5. Unknown says:

In response to Robert Dyer … Dr. Adrian Rogers did not say that he was for a certain race of people to be enslaved. I agree, with him, if slavery existed, we would not have this welfare mess! Put people to work in some capacity to earn a place to live and the ability to eat.
It is the racist mindset of people, such as yourself, Robert, who believe that the word slavery is confined to a specific race or group of people. Open your mind up and stop with your bigotry.

Just because someone has an outlandish opinion about one topic, does not negate all of their other opinions.

  7. H. Schick says:

yea, I'm sure that Rogers was refering to white slavery.

Certainly the "outlandish opinion" on one topic does not negate all the comments made by another, however, since the previous comment is in the same vain as the other I think that his view on slavery clarifies his view on the poor, apparently he views the poor as some parasite on society only good enough for enslavement. His view are not only outdated but dangerous for a world that needs desparetly to address the inblances in wealth and power before it all explodes in our faces.

  9. JHob says:

In response to anonymous and H. Schick:

Who's to say that any of Dr. Roger's quotes are in vain? You? Well I certainly won't take your word for it. When speaking of slavery in this quote, Dr. Roger's was actually referring to biblical slavery. Not American or race based slavery. Just a solution to a group that is not productive in our society, they want monitary handouts to spend on more material thing, and not what they need to survive. But of course this is easily taken out of context. You of course don't have to believe me on that, however, being a member of Dr. Rogers' church for 18 years, I think I have a better vantage point on the man's views.

And as for the welfare, there you go making assumptions again. And based on your logic, ill-informed assumptions. There is no middle ground in your logic, you see the problem as Dr. Rogers' viewpoint and don't see the true problem. The poor forfeit their potential power when they choose not to work, or to spend beyond their means. That is what paralyzes the poor from ever climbing up in society; they want and get what they can not handle which leads to credit card debit, and house forclosure. Therefore they seek assistance from anyone with a handout. Now our government is no shinning example for financial stability, but they are the ones with their wallets open, so why not take a freebie, right? It is that mindset that has us in this imbalance. Those who are responsible and have wealth know how to handle it, and those without it don't want to work to get it.

    That is the problem.

  10. Sam Waite says:

What is the difference between slavery and modern government welfare?

    1. Both have an indentured master.
    2. Slaves must be productive for their living and the welfare cult are unproductive parasites on society.
    3. Both must bow themselves to their master.
    4. Welfare demands your soul and self respect, slavery does not.

Roger did make reference to slavery as indicaed however, his comment was based on "New Testament time" slaves live well and were given authority over many important affairs, they were very important to society, slavery then didn't was not the same as slavery in the western world. Read the life of Joseph.
